Story

This fundraising is in relation to a partnership between drug education charity the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation and Sandra Larmour, the mother of Jeni Larmour from Co Armagh, who tragically lost her life to ketamine on her first day at Newcastle University in 2020. This partnership has already seen its first tour across Northern Ireland schools with the performance of Mark Wheeller’s powerful verbatim play, I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die, with further tours planned for the new school year.

I am undertaking this significant challenge to row the equivalent of a marathon (42,195m) at my local PureGym to raise funds and awareness for this initiative in enhancing drug education in schools across Northern Ireland.

Money raised in this fundraiser will be put towards the invaluable the work done in Northern Ireland and will directly support vital initiatives such as school plays, workshops, and other educational programs designed to inform and protect young people.

By contributing, you are helping to equip our students and young people with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, ensuring a safer and more educated future for our communities.

Many thanks for your support.

Updates

I have now completed the challenge, you'll be glad to hear that I managed to avoid using bubble wrap or any assistance :) and didn't get any more calluses. It was an absolute pleasure doing this challenge for DSM, The fundraising hasn't yet stopped though so there's still time to donate.

The row is drawing ever closer - 30,000m / 42,195m complete - it was a good session, no calluses and no cushion !

I will be tapering down over the next 2 weeks.

Yesterday Evenings session did and didn't go to plan, I was going to repeat the 1/2 Marathon in splits but felt good so went for 25k instead :)

The pacing felt good and it was a phycological milestone.

Biggest challenge so far was people watching, the gym was quiet :)

Saturday morning was a physiological and a phycological milestone. I dialled in the full marathon length and went at a steady pace until last minute pusing avg stroke rate per min from 20 to 30 to adapt with some uncomfortable pacing. Managed to do slightly under 1/2 Marathon length, a win for the mentality!

The session went well, pacing was fine. Just some calluses on my hand but amazon has saved the day with specific gloves en-route.

Supporting

Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation

The Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation is a drug and alcohol education charity that aims to support young people to make safe choices about drugs and alcohol and reduce harm. We do this through increasing understanding of the effects and risks, and helping to develop life skills and resilience. The Foundation was set up in January 2014 by Tim and Fiona Spargo-Mabbs in response to the death of their 16-year-old son Daniel having taken ecstasy.
